Alabama Football Podcast Breaks Down Alabama’s 2017 season opener against Florida State
Scoring the Offense
We step through an exercise where we try to allocate responsibility for the offense’s less than stellar performance. Was it play calling, Jalen’s development, or Florida State’s potent defense? The answer across the board is a resounding yes.
Line Play
We discuss the playing rotation, or lack thereof, including one of the first moves we expect to see over the coming weeks.
Rookie Contributors
Alabama’s 2017 recruiting haul was quite impressive and many of these youngsters are already making their mark across all phases of the game. Of note is the number of youngsters inserted into key game time situations.
Linebacker Depth
Alabama suffered an unprecedented run of injury to the linebacker corps. Fortunately this was previously a deep position but tune in as we explore options for addressing the emerging needs.
Secondary In the Air
Alabama has a nice if underrated collection of candidates at the corner position. The Tide also boasts one of the best and most versatile secondary players in the country, which we don’t want to see moved to corner. Check out how both statements are true and are likely to remain that way if Alabama is to make a run for the title.
Mixed Bag Special Teams
Alabama’s Special Teams contributed both frustration and exhilaration to the proceedings Saturday night. The jury remains out as to what the Tide really has here.
Heart of a Champion
It was only week one, but tune in to hear how the Tide demonstrated the heart, toughness, and resolve that Saban is in constant search of.
Mini Game balls
Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?
Alabama’s Next Opponent
Next up for Alabama are the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Tides 2017 home opener in Tuscaloosa.
Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show
I enjoy how Saban fields as many as 18 defenders coming out of timeouts or play stoppages. As with most things Saban related, its more about efficiency than it is cleverness. The Alabama defense is versatile and rotates lots of players. More than simply leaving the offense guessing, the ploy is about having all player combinations available and ready, then removing the pieces not required.
Its smooth and fluid, and if a little bit clever then so be it.
Well, in a gesture of gamesmanship, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher, who coached with Saban at LSU, had his own answer. In like kind situations, Fisher allowed only his five linemen to take the field leaving unknown combinations of skill players to follow.
While the Tide never appeared impacted by the ploy, it provided a clever response and one that surely Saban respected.
We hope you’ll check out the Podcast and in the meantime, Roll Tide!
